Wow! Look the feeding frenzy known as Christmas is finally over! The cards, the presents, the Need to Eat Turkey is over for another year... and all is quiet - and er strangely green. The other day the Nedster and I emerged from the house to be dazzled by Green Grass. Great patches of the stuff amongst the slush and ice.
Grass wow.
And green?
Ah.. green and peaceful. Lovely...
But hang on... whoah... the peace was too good to last...
Yes the trauma known as a Scottish Hogmanay is right around the corner.
Here it comes. The need to Clean the House.. the need to party like it's Saturday to the power of 100... count down to the BELLS..then kiss everyone... to sing Auld Lang Syne like you know what it means...munch on black bun and shortbread... and go First Footing.
Damn, I need to find a Dark Haired Man to cross my thresh hold with a piece of coal and a bottle of whisky asap.
Meanwhiles Happy New Year! Wish me luck in avoiding Old Mac as the bells ring...
And feel free to join in the ritual singing of gibberish...

Happy impending new year to you, ma'am. Yes I did just call you 'ma'am'. :) Of course I'm freaked out that you'll be in a different year from me for six whole hours. Isn't that creepy somehow? I think so.
Also, I'm ashamed, as a Scot to ask this but what in HELL is a "black bun"? I'm all down with the dark stranger/lump of coal thing, but never heard of the black bun. Do you burn a GOOD bun or what? :)

Veg - Still ROFLing.. actually Black Bun is so disgusting that you may as well incinerate a perfectly good bun and be dun with it.
Maybe that's what the coal is for..
Receipe for aforesaid bun here...

Crap, it actually sounds sort of tasty! Like a mince pie on steroids.
Now a tradition I could get behind would be scoffing down an ICED bun. :)

Jenny and I will be seeing the new year in with Jools Holland's Hootenanny as usual. He always has some good musicians lined up.
I hope you have a great 2011!

Nick - Happy New Year to you and Jenny. Hope you have enough water to dilute your whisky in your part of NI..

Happy New Year honey.
May 2011 be a hell of a lot less shitty than 2010.
That's all I'm sayin.
Oh yeah, and here's to us fabulous bloggin' pals!

I'll be enjoying the hootenanny apart from the unintelligible little arse Jools Holland.
Happy New Year Macy!

I've heard that there is an elderly gentleman who has been soaking his teeth in a jar along side his bed, has washed his socks and smalls, trimmed his nasal hair and has been practicing his closed eyes puckering in front of the mirror.
I loved the New Year tradition when my granny and Pop were alive.
I have no idea why, but we always started New Years day with poached kippers and freshly baked scones.
Hope you had a great Eve and that the year brings you nothing but joy

I for one am sooooo happy to have both the holidays and 2010 behind me. I always breathe a sigh of relief after new years, but this year especially. I am unfamiliar with the Scottish holiday you speak of...but I feel I must investigate. Lately, I've taken to investigating my roots on Ancestry.com and have discovered a surprisingly lengthy Scottish lineage. My great great great grandmother was from Argyleshire, which totally explains my love for argyle...its in my DNA : )
So glad you stalked my blog, so I can now stalk yours. I hope 2011 brings you bits of peace and laughter in between the shittiness that is grief.
