Words are not completely useless, I think; and even if they are to you, I still want to leave my comment on here and let you know how sorry I am to learn of your mother's death.
When my husband died, I had many reactions from other people, very similar to what I can read here in the comments, and many said they were not sure what was the right thing to say and that words failed them and so on.
I found that, at least for me, it did not matter at all WHAT they wrote or said. What mattered was THAT they were in touch with me, and didn't, out of fear of saying or writing the wrong thing, cut me off completely.
Because there is no such thing as "the right thing" to say under the circumstances.
